Tout enflammé à la sortie du dernier Venetian Snares, j’ai proclamé ce psychopathe comme le représentant, le meilleur successeur de l’après vague Aphex Twin, conjuguant talent, beauté et folie dans chacune de ses compositions.
Une semaine après, je tombe par hasard sur une annonce proclamant la sortie d’un nouveau disque de Chris Clark ( juste “Clark” pour l’occasion) toujours sur le mirifique label WARP.
Malgré trois ans séparant son chef d’oeuvre imparfait “Empty the Bones of you”, comment ais-je pu oublier ce type?
Car il est clair que si un artiste peut se targuer d’être dans le sillage des plus grands de l’électronique, c’est bien Chris Clark, en regard avec tout ce qu’il a pu nous servir jusqu’à maintenant. (Pas assez d’ailleurs)
Si Venetian Snares est le pendant énervé de l’IDM d’aujourd’hui, Chris Clark en propose une facette bien plus intimiste, mais non moins fracturée…
Fébrile avant de démarrer ce disque. Deux semaines d’attentes interminables avant de goûter aux nouveaux titres de Chris Clark.
Et des les premiers secondes, je ne suis pas déçu : Herr Bar se joue de tout, avec ses notes de boites à musiques noyées petit à petit dans des vagues de nappes alternant entre puissance et intimité.
Le titre monte en force jusqu’à emplir entièrement nos oreilles, jusqu’à prendre littéralement l’ascendant sur toute structure possible. La puissance du son est impressionnante, occupant tout l’espace alloué tant bien que mal par notre casque. Les beats fracassent une sorte de chaos sonore, ou la mélancolie du début, complètement annihilée, laisse place un mur de son imposant.
Il faut savoir que Body Riddle va sur les deux tiers de son contenu opter pour la même recette, une mélodie claire et fragile qui va petit à petit se fracasser à un marasme sonore, à une déstructuration complète tendant vers la destruction des maigres bases du morceau ou au contraire à l’apaisement clairement instable. Mais rassurons les oreilles sensibles, cette destruction n’est jamais agressive, jamais désagréable, toujours dans la maîtrise et la beauté d’une totale perte d’équilibre, d’une explosion divine sur le fil.
Herzod en est aussi un digne émissaire. Dénué de toute violence, de sons, beats ou basses appuyés, le titre repose sur un enchevêtrement de lignes de synthés triturées à l’extrême. On a l’impression d’écouter un son en 3D se mouvant aux grés de la volonté de Clark. Les nappes sont claires, belles à crever, pour finir dans un mille feuilles de saturations complètements décalquées. L’amateur qui se laissera abandonner dans paysage décharné sera automatiquement touché en son fort intérieur.
D’autant plus que TED, le succédant directement, pourrait en étonner plus d’un. Gros Synthé débarqué de nul part qui va se faire exploser par une rythmique Hip-Hop ultra appuyée. On lève un bras, et on fait du headbanging en solo. Le morceau, toujours au bord de l’explosion, file nous donne envie de se jeter dans la pièce après un quart d’heure d’expérimentations beaucoup moins directes. Ted échouera dans une crique bien mois accueillante que le départ, avec un rythme aride et fracassé, et cela seulement pour quelques secondes.
Roulettes Thrift Run continuera à élever le tempo avec une rythmique flirtant avec la drum and bass, zébrée d’éclairs métalliques, avant de renouer avec un semblant d’ossature HipHop sur l’ouverture de l’excellent Vengance Drools. La pression va marquer des temps d’arrêts, pour laisser vivre une ambiance fantomatique, avant que le rythme massif revienne violenter le tout. Et l’apparition de cliquetis mélancoliques ne va pas calmer Chris Clark, qui va littéralement les éviscérer avec un son d’une saleté et d’une rudesse hallucinante. Les choeurs décharnés finaux ne nous relèveront pas, le choc est rude, le morceau gigantesque.
Entre temps, Clark aura le bon goût de laisser vivre des ambiances calmes et ambiant sur les interludes Springtime Epigram et Drew on the mouth, et balancer un violon en pâtures à des synthétiseurs sans pitié avec Frau Mav jouant à le balader sur de véritables montagnes russes. La fluette mélodie tentant d’intervenir à la moitié ne fera pas le poids non plus face à ce véritable ras de marée de sons.
Entamant la dernière ligne droite de l’album, Matthew Unburned casse littéralement la gueule avec son piano dissonant malmené par des saturations cradingues et un rythme Abstrait lorgnant encore avec un Hiphop mutant et malmené. Mais la qualité de cette piste devient indiscutable lorsque qu’un semblant de violon s’enroule au piano pour monter dans les hautes sphères de la mélodie planante. Tout se calme, comme un champ de bataille déserté par les conflits. On se fait malmener à l’ouverture pour mieux planer pendant tout le coeur du morceau, avant de repartir de plus belle, bousculé par ces beats imparables.
Du grand art, et un incontournable de “Body riddle”.
Pour nous achever, débarque sans crier gare LE chef d’oeuvre de l’album, Night Knuckles.
Pourtant seul Morceau non électronique à proprement parlé, il émerveille avec cet enchevêtrement de sonorités toutes droit sorties de boites à musiques. On ne peut pas faire plus touchant. Il faut imaginer un morceau Drill and Bass, ou tout son serait remplacé par ces cliquetis symbolisant la pureté même.
Ce morceau me tue, me broie les viscères, m’écrase le coeur. Les yeux fermés, je suis transporté comme rarement j’ai pu l’être auparavant. La première écoute, après tous ces titres ultra-electroniques, fut un choc. La mélodie est belle comme la nuit, angélique, touchante et mélancolique au plus au point. Une vraie balle dans le ventre.
Alors certes les effets d’une musique sont très subjectifs, mais il m’est impossible de rester de marbre devant ce ravissement de tous les instants… Même si certains n’y verront qu’un “morceau-sympa-avec-des-bruits-de-boites-à-musique-dedans”. La structure du morceau, et ses sonorités font immédiatement penser à certains morceaux de “Drukqs” d’Aphex Twin, ou du fabuleux morceau Nannou du même génie. Mais ce dernier se fait écraser devant la maîtrise de Night Knuckles. Merci pour ces 4minutes.
Encore sonné par ce titre, ainsi que tout le contenu de cet album de géant, Chris Clark va nous donner l’occasion de redescendre sur terre avec la longue plongé de The Autumnal Crush courant sur 8 minutes.
Et il ne va pourtant pas nous ménager sur l’ouverture. La très belle mélodie va se faire rapidement submerger par un vrai bloc de sonorité, poussé à la saturation. Et pourtant, on plane comme jamais. Cela crache, se déchire dans nos oreilles, on se fait valdinguer comme une vulgaire poupée sous les assauts de ce véritable tsunami industriel.
C’est superbe.

Puis la rudesse des sons va laisser place à 4 minutes d’une longue chute dans le noir, le tout s’éloignant avec un dégradé presque imperceptible pour s’éteindre le plus calmement du monde.
Reste alors un fabuleux disque électronique, comme un condensé de tout ce qui peut se faire de meilleur dans l’electronica, et particulièrement sur le Label WARP. Cela faisait longtemps que ce Label n’avait pas sorti un disque de cette qualité. Sorti le même jour que le dernier Squarepusher, l’un des plus grand nom de la même maison, il se trouve un peu dans l’ombre. Mais la qualité est incomparablement supérieure.
On peut lire sur le blister de l’album Trax qui énonce : “D’aussi haut, jamais chaos ne parut si beau.”
Ils se trompent, nous ne surplombons pas ce chaos. Clark nous plonge la tête en plein dedans.
Sorte de brassage de bien des influences au sein de son monde musical, il se pose surtout comme le My Bloody Valentine de l’électronique. Tout en ayant une forte personnalité extrêmement forte, en proposant quelque chose de vraiment singulier et intimiste.
L’un des meilleurs disques d’electronica qui m’a été donné d’écouter depuis quelques années.
